Practical shooting is an engaging, dynamic shooting sport using live ammunition. It developed alongside the design and use of handheld firearms. Initially conceived as training for police, military, special units and security services, it gradually became a popular sport that continues to grow around the world.

It is sometimes recommended as a form of stress relief with excellent results.

A defining feature of this sport is its contribution to safer firearm handling. Practical shooting is built on three elements: accuracy, power and speed.

The origins of practical shooting can be traced to the 1950s, particularly to U.S. Army colonel and FBI instructor Jeff Cooper. The sport quickly spread across the continents and today has a closely connected community of enthusiasts.

IPSC was formally established at the International Pistol Conference in Columbia, USA, in 1976. At the time of the original article, the international association had 81 member regions. World and European championships were held regularly, rules continued to develop, and efforts focused on connecting and strengthening the IPSC community. More information is available from the International Practical Shooting Confederation.
